The 2010 Barbara Sabol Lecture
"So much to be thankful for ..." by
Rob Robinson of Picture The Homeless
Monday, October 25, 2010 at 7:00 PM Burke Auditorium at King's College
Mr. Rob Robinson is a member of the Campaign to Restore National Housing Rights which is supported by the National Economic and Social Rights Initiative (NESRI).
He is also a member of the Land and Housing Action group of the Take Back the Land Movement which is coordinated by the US Human Rights Network. Rob honed his skills as an activist working as a board member and housing campaign leader with Picture the Homeless, a grassroots organization in New York City.
Please join us on Monday, October 25, 2010, 7:00 PM, Burke Auditorium, King's College, Wilkes-Barre, PA.
The Take Back the Land Movement asserts that housing is a human right and, as such, the policies which violate that right are morally wrong and, therefore, must be directly challenged. As such, organizations across the US are engaging in "live-in" campaigns designed to house human beings and directly challenge those policies and laws that promote vacant housing during this housing crisis. Too many of our citizens are forced into overcrowded conditions. Homelessness has soared to never before seen numbers while the very banks that foreclosed on our property are being bailed out by the tax dollars of the people they forced into homelessness.
The NEPA Organizing Center will be on hand to provide follow up information and related initiatives.

The Barbara Sabol Memorial Lecture presents nationally recognized writer and commentator, Pamela Varkony. She is best known for her keen insights on politics and current affairs. As a freelance op-ed columnist for The Morning Call, a Tribune Publishing newspaper, her stories cover subjects from business ethics to the status of women in the third world. She has traveled twice on fact-finding trips to Afghanistan, including an “embed” assignment with the Command Surgeon of U.S. Troops in theater. She has provided stories to National Public Radio for regional and national broadcasts, and recently joined the Emmy Award winning PBS-39 program “Tempo”, as on-air commentator.
A “citizen of the world”, Pamela Varkony not only travels the globe, she has helped to change it through both her writing and her advocacy. As the iron curtain was falling across Central Europe, Pam worked closely with the Hungarian government to develop a cross-cultural communications course for their officials. She has taught management techniques to female entrepreneurs in emerging markets, assertiveness skills to businesswomen in Australia, established a leadership program for one of the Czech Republic’s largest corporations, and assisted Afghan women in becoming entrepreneurs. Her columns from overseas have brought home such stories as the wounding of Afghan children by American troops and the deplorable lack of medical care for Afghan women.
She is a member of “American Women in Radio and Television” and the “Pennsylvania Women’s Press Assoc.” who recognized her with the 2008 “Excellence in Journalism” award for her editorial writing. Pam is also a member of the Business Council for Peace, a UNIFEM/UN organization.
A pioneer in women’s empowerment, Pam writes and speaks frequently on the subjects of gender, diversity, and their impact on business and government cultures. She is the founder of “Power Of Women”, an all-volunteer networking, mentoring and education initiative that provides support for women to reach their goals. She is a recipient of the Athena Award for business achievement; the American Association of University Women’s “Gateway Award” for leadership in women’s issues; a “Woman of Distinction” award from the Girl Scouts, as well as the Business Council for Peace, VERA Award for her work in Afghanistan.
